FAQ Friday: How do I add symbols or characters to my email subject lines?

0

Since we first wrote about symbols in email subject lines here and here, the trend is still popular but seems to have slowed down some. For example, Groupon used to include multiple symbols in a single subject line. More recently they have only included one or two and they haven’t used them on every email.

If you want to try the trend, here are the steps:

  1. Find a symbol you want to use from a site such as fsymbols.com or from this Wikipedia article.
  2. Copy the symbol and paste it into your subject line. Be sure to copy the symbol itself, not the unicode.
  3. Send test emails to a variety of email clients and mobile devices to make sure it looks good. If a symbol is not supported by an email client or on a device, your recipients will see a ☐.

That’s it! Have fun with symbols, but be careful not to over do it.

What do you think of symbols in email subject lines? Have you used them?
